Cupping therapy has specific days that are considered suitable. These days are determined based on the seasons, lunar calendar, and days of the week, considering both medical and religious aspects, as indicated in the Hadith. Cupping can be performed in all 12 months of the year when necessary. The most beneficial times for cupping are during spring and autumn.
For someone who has never undergone cupping before, it is more appropriate to have it done at the earliest opportunity instead of waiting for the ideal cupping season or lunar days. Delaying until the suitable time may allow the toxic substances in the blood to spread.
Additionally, during the summer, particularly in hot climates, cupping is highly recommended. Those residing in hot regions and suffering from high blood pressure could benefit from having cupping twice during the summer.
In winter, cupping helps prevent common cold-related illnesses such as flu, colds, and infections, which are prevalent among individuals with weakened immune systems or those working in stressful environments. If cupping is to be done for treating an illness, the season, lunar days, or days of the week do not matter—it should be done as soon as possible.
Cupping Based on the Lunar Calendar:
The most beneficial days according to Sunnah are the 17th, 19th, and 21st days of the lunar month. Cupping between the 5th and 25th days of the lunar month is also acceptable.
The renowned physician Avicenna, in his book "The Canon of Medicine," advises against cupping after the 25th and before the 5th of the lunar month unless it is an emergency.
The most advantageous time for cupping is during the third week of the lunar month, when the gravitational pull of the moon is at its peak. This gravitational effect, similar to the tides in the seas, impacts the human body, altering hormonal and fluid balance.
Modern studies have shown that the moon’s influence causes changes in the human body, such as heightened hormonal activity and fluid balance, especially during full moons. This period is also associated with increased emotional sensitivity and physical reactions.
Therefore, cupping is most effective when performed between the 10th and 25th of the lunar month. It can help relax the body and facilitate the removal of toxins due to increased activity in the bloodstream during this time.
If cupping is being done as a Sunnah practice rather than for medical reasons, it is best to have it on odd-numbered days like the 17th, 19th, or 21st of the lunar month.
Performing cupping as a Sunnah means doing it solely because the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recommended it, even without any health issues. For medical purposes, cupping should be done whenever needed without delay.
For individuals without any health issues, Avicenna recommended cupping 2-3 times a year. However, this advice was given nearly 1,000 years ago when environmental pollution and artificial additives in food were non-existent.
In modern times, it is recommended to undergo cupping four times a year—once at the start of each season—for optimal health.
For medical treatment, cupping can be done up to seven sessions per month, provided they are spaced at least one month apart. Consecutive sessions without breaks, ranging from seven to ten sessions, can provide maximum benefit.
Early intervention often reduces the need for extended sessions. Some patients achieve recovery after just 1-3 sessions of cupping.
